The baritone Roberto Frontali made his Royal Opera debut in 1997 as Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and has since sung Ford (Falstaff), Duke of Nottingham (Roberto Devereux in concert), Stankar (Stiffelio) and Baron Scarpia (Tosca) for The Royal Opera. He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana) and Tonio (Pagliacci).
Frontali was born in Rome, and made his debut there in 1986 in Spontini’s Agnes von Hohenstaufen. He has gone on to perform for many of Europe’s leading opera companies and theatres, including La Monnaie, Brussels, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, La Fenice, Venice, Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, Vienna State Opera, Theater an der Wien, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Teatro Comunale, Bologna, Royal Danish Opera, Arena di Verona and the Maggio Musicale, Florence. Further afield he has sung at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and the New National Theatre, Tokyo, in São Paulo, Beijing and for Los Angeles Opera and San Francisco Opera, among others.
Verdi has always been key to Frontali’s career, and his Verdi roles include the title roles of Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra and Falstaff, Ezio (Attila), Don Carlo (Ernani), Count di Luna (Il trovatore), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Don Carlo di Vargas (La forza del destino) and Iago (Otello). His other roles include Scarpia, Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West), Michele (Il tabarro), Gianni Schicchi and Michonnet (Adriana Lecouvreur).
